Consolidate. Planning to be back home? or moving abroad for a short term contract? then this shouldnt apply to you. For anybody going on a more long term move, the very first thing you have to do is consolidate your whole life. For many, this is very tough. As you may have to part with personal belongings of sentimental value or belongings such as a house or a car and other day-to-day items.
Sort out your bank. Be sure to inform your bank about moving and do this as early as possible. To use your cards abroad ensure that the bank has removed any international restrictions from your cards and check if your bank can offer you paperless statements. Before using your cards internationally be sure to have checked the exchange rates and fees.
Cancel the utilities/give notice. If you have a lease it is best to speak to your landlord in advance as to possibly settle a termination of your lease. You will be fined if you fail to give 30 days notice about moving abroad if you have a 1-year or more lease. You will also need to call the gas, electric, telephone, cable and water companies, where applicable, to terminate services there. In order to be billed correctly you should inform these companies of when you gave your landlord notice and the date you will have left the premises
Plan for the 1st few days abroad. The first week abroad is going to be the most difficult. That is the time during which you'll be getting a new home, getting your phone and daily utilities set up and learning your way around. Purchase a guidebook and/or map in advance and study as much as you can about the culture in which you are about to be residing. Search for online resources about which neighbourhoods are good to live in and which parts of the city to avoid.
Get your documents together. Paperwork is required when moving internationally. First of all make sure you passport has blank pages and is valid for atleast 1 year. Ensure that your passport is renewed straight away if your passport is close to its expiration date. Depending on the country you are traveling to you mabe be required to have a visa. At least 2 months before you move you should check the visa requirement online. Be sure to have copies of your bank statements, marriage certificate, birth certificate, international driving license and other pertinent documents with you when you move abroad.
